Maritime Security Course

Provider: Forces Protection Group
Duration: 6-9 days (flexible depending on client/industry requirements)
Qualification: Certificate of Completion (aligned to international maritime security standards, e.g., IMO, ISO, and industry best practice)

Course Requirements

  • Age: Minimum 21 years

  • Background: Prior military, law enforcement, or private security experience recommended (exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis)

  • Medical: Candidates must be medically fit and provide proof of recent medical clearance

  • Overview of maritime threats (piracy, terrorism, smuggling, stowaways)

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations and legal framework

  • Roles and responsibilities of maritime security operatives

2. Maritime Security Operations

  • Shipboard security procedures

  • Embarkation/disembarkation protocols

  • Crew and passenger liaison

  • Vessel protection drills and watchstanding

3. Threat Awareness & Risk Assessment

  • Recognising suspicious activity at sea and in port

  • Intelligence gathering and reporting procedures

  • Route risk assessments and voyage planning

4. Counter-Piracy & Defensive Measures

  • Vessel hardening techniques

  • Use of barriers, citadels, and safe rooms

  • Counter-boarding drills

  • Rules of engagement and escalation of force

5. Weapons Handling & Use of Force 

  • Firearms safety and handling (maritime-specific weapons systems)

  • Rules for the use of force (RUF)

  • Live-fire a simulation training scenarios

6. Emergency Response & Crisis Management

  • Hostage survival principles

  • Emergency communication protocols

  • Casualty evacuation and first aid at sea

  • Firefighting and damage control basics

7. Maritime Law & Compliance

  • International and national laws affecting maritime security

  • Private Maritime Security Company (PMSC) regulations

  • Rules of engagement in international waters vs. territorial waters

8. Practical Exercises

  • Onboard security drills

  • Counter-boarding and anti-piracy exercises

  • Full mission profiles (FMPs) replicating real-world scenarios

Assessment & Certification

  • Continuous assessment during practical training

  • Written knowledge test at course conclusion

  • Practical evaluation through scenario-based exercises
